Clean Water Project
Our volunteers have worked for the past 12 years to improve the conditions in rural eastern Haiti. Many of the residents in Saltadere lack sufficient access to clean water, where only two water sources are available: a gravity-fed pipeline built in 1980s and river water. The sparse rainfall significantly limits the amount of river water available for Saltadere citizens. The water in the river is also polluted and people who cannot afford chlorine tablets to purify the water are in danger of getting cholera, which kills many Saltadere citizens annually. To prevent this, we are distributing Madidrop at our health clinic and in areas that the pipeline doesn’t reach.
With the help of the town committee, our projects have worked to provide the proper access to clean water by fixing broken sections of pipeline and extending it to other villages. We have also updated hydrants and installed higher quality faucets. We have worked with the state and national government to create a pipeline plan, but it is currently awaiting funding.
